When I used to play with you,
who you were no one would know.
No fear or heart’s dismay with you
was mine in life’s exuberant flow.
To woods and fields all without end
you called me, as my closest friend,
and I laughed and ran away with you
dawn after dawn, so long ago.
Such songs you sang out clear and whole
whose meaning, dear friend, none might chart.
Only with those songs sang my soul
and danced my ever-exuberant heart.
But what do I see now the play is done?
A silent sky, hushed moon and sun,
a universe poised still, apart,
That at your feet keeps its eyes low.
This game you play with such disguise—
I love it too, to play my part.
For when with tears you fill my eyes,
you also send a laughing heart.
To loss of all I am resigned…
and in a deep way all I find.
From a warm lap you fling me far,
to draw me back to you in tow.
